CONSUMERS SET HOUSING TRENDS

When it comes to home design, consumers set the trend.  Here are some of the latest trends in housing, according to PBA.  A  two-story home with brick or vinyl siding with two or more bathrooms and three or more bedrooms are in demand.

Home buyers want space and lots of it!  New home buyers want larger homes with lots of dining room and kitchen space.  Dining rooms are becoming larger to allow for dinner parties, but they are not necessarily set apart in a designated space.  Home buyers especially prefer large kitchens adjacent to family rooms and want the two rooms to be visually open or divided with a half wall.

Home buyers also want kitchen with high ceilings, a walk-in pantry, island work areas, extra long counters and light wood cabinets. A typical upscale kitchen includes granite counters, stainless appliances, hardwood and porcelain tile floors and maple or cherry cabinets. Stainless appliances continue as the top choice among household appliances. In addition to dining room and kitchen space, home buyers also want extra rooms such as laundry rooms, home offices, and dens or libraries.
When it comes to the flooring in the home, home buyers are choosing real hardwood, but porcelain tile with a stone look and cork are becoming increasingly popular.
Making a comeback in bathrooms is jetted tubs and the newest trend is two-person showers. After years of shrinking in size, jetted tubs are beginning to grow in popularity again and, in other households, the tub is eliminated altogether and replaced with a two-person shower.
Additionally, home buyers want exterior features as well as interior. Exterior features include a front porch, deck or patio in the rear and exterior lighting. The biggest trend in backyards is filling space that used to be devoted to grass with rock gardens, waterfalls, creeks and ponds.
Amenities and specifications that buyers request most frequently determine the trends in home design says Scott H. Cannon, PBA President
