April 2005
SUCCESS OF REALTY TRANSFER TAX Governor Rendell pitched several revenue-raising suggestions to legislators to help address a mass transit funding crisis to raise $207 million in additional revenue to cover two years of funding for mass transit. Rendell proposed the following measures: a third-of-a-percent increase in the realty transfer tax, a $5 increase in the automotive tile and license plate fees and a $2.50 increase for driver records fees. The Pennsylvania Builders Association (PBA) launched A Call to Action to mobilize tens-of-thousands of members in an energized offensive to keep legislators from raising the realty transfer tax. Higher taxes could threaten our industry by slowing home sales. PBA members have responded and continue to respond. At last count 1,650 contacts with legislators were made and the number is still rising. The PBA remains concerned that pressure will build from rural legislators to find a dedicated source for permanent mass transit funding. We need to continue pushing our letter writing campaign. Become active in this campaign. You can go to the PBA website www.pahomes.org and click on the alert message at the top of the screen. You will be guided through a simple, automated process to write and send an email to your legislators. For members without Internet access, call 800-692-7339 ext.3500 and follow the voice instructions. The PBA is going to send a blast fax to its members. Members can fax back the form with their name and full address, including zip code, to 717-730-4396. The PBA will add each members name to a letter opposing the tax and email it to the memberss local legislators. Ask family, friends and neighbors to join us in this effort
